The Lord Is Faithful
In an age when truth has been reduced to opinion and covenants are easily broken, to talk of the faithfulness of God is an anomaly. Moses said that God is not a man that lies. Man lies. God cannot lie, because He is Truth. It is impossible for Him to lie, for in doing so He would deny Himself. Faithfulness is based on truth. One is faithful when we does what he says; when he is true to his word. When a couple weds, they make a vow of faithfulness to one another. They say: “Until death do us part”. It is a lifetime commitment to be faithful to one another. If the couple does not keep their vows, they become covenant breakers and liars.
Just one lie makes a person a liar. If the Word of God had only one untrue statement in it, it would be unreliable and not to be trusted. Man did not decide that God is faithful, it was God who revealed to man His faithfulness. When God passed in front of Moses on Mount Sinai, He spoke from the cloud saying: “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness…” (Ex. 34.6) Here the Lord reveals Himself to man. Faithfulness is God’s nature, not just His behavior. Who He is and what He says can be trusted at all times.
Every word that proceeds from the mouth of God will come to pass. Every promise and every prophecy will be fulfilled. The Holy Spirit watches over the Word to preform it. We have this guarantee. Man’s perception of truth is most often based on his thoughts or feelings. When he feels lonely and depressed, he assumes that God is not present. But God said in His Word that He would never leave you nor forsake you. (Heb. 13.5) Who are you going to believe, feelings that lie or God who is Truth? Even when you are in the depths of despair or passing through the valley of the shadow of death, He is present. No matter how low you go, His arms are underneath you, holding you in His love. How do I know this? Because God said it, and so it is. (Deut. 33.27)
Did you know that even when you are unfaithful, God remains faithful? That is why we are to trust in the Lord and not in man. Trusting in man, brings disappointment and, as Jeremiah says, a curse. (Jer. 17.5-7) Trusting in the Lord brings a blessing. You will never be disappointed with God. I have had people come to me, questioning God’s faithfulness. They ask: “If God is good, why did He permit my father to die so young?” Or: “If the Bible is true, why did God not heal my child?” So quickly they doubt His faithfulness and goodness. God’s thoughts are not our thoughts and His ways are higher than our ways. He does not always explain Himself, but He does always reveals Himself.
Our feelings and thoughts can place us on stormy seas. Up and down, back and forth our soul is tossed. God’s Word is an anchor to our soul. It is when we trust in what He has said, that we can find peace in the storms of life. The soul seeks comfort, whereas the Lord acts with purpose. In the Proverbs it says to, “not let steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, so you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man.” (3.3-4) Because God is faithful, we can be faithful. Let His Word be what comes out of our mouth. Let His Word be what guides our every decision. Hold tightly to every promise, every verse. The Lord is faithful.
