Begins With A Seed
By means of parables, Jesus used familiar settings to illustrate spiritual truths. Though some were so simple, the disciples had difficulty in understanding what Jesus was saying. The most common of these parables was that of the seed and the sower. When Jesus began to explain to the disciples the meaning of the parable, He explained that the seed is the Word. John begins his Gospel by saying: “In the beginning was the Word…” Let’s do the math. If A=B and B=C then A=C. Or, if the seed is the Word and the Word was in the beginning, then the seed was in the beginning.
After Adam and Eve sinned, God said to the serpent: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He (Seed) shall bruise your head and you shall bruise His heel.” (Gen. 3.15) There, in the Garden of Eden, God planted a promise of a seed that would defeat Satan and restore fallen man to a right standing with God. The same seed that spoke creation into existence, would be planted into the woman. When the Bible says, “her seed”, it is referring to a Divine conception. “Hers” have eggs not seeds. If the seed were of natural conception, coming from Adam, it would be referred to as his seed. But, by being “her seed”, it shows God’s act of immaculate conception.
This Seed superseded that of the serpent. The promise was given that salvation for all of mankind would come through a “Seed” in the womb of a woman. “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman….to redeem us…” (Gal. 4.4-5) You see, the story of the virgin woman is the story of the promised “Seed”. Seeds conceive life, seeds rebirth life and seeds reproduce life. Jesus prophesied of His death when He said that, the “Seed”, would die on the cross. (John 12.24) Jesus, the “Seed”, was buried in the grave. Jesus, the “Seed”, rose from the grave, (resurrection). The “Seed” triumphed over death. Crushed the enemies’ head under His feet and broke the power of the curse that was over all of God’s creation.
Not only is the Seed the Word and the Word is Jesus, but the sower of the Seed is Jesus. Our hearts are the soil that the Word is sown into. There are a total of forty-four verses in the New Testament where the Greek word “sperma” was translated as seed. This is the same word from which we derive the English word “sperm”. The Word of God is the divine Sperm. It has the genetic code of His nature. When the Word of God is sown into us, it is powerful and active in birthing God’s purpose and reproducing His nature. This Seed sanctifies wholly, separates soul from spirit, destroys all pride and pulls down fortresses in the mind. The Word of God brings forth faith in all who hear. It all begins with the Seed.
Just as a seed has to remain in the ground over time to germinate, so the Word of God has to abide in us to be able to bear fruit. Jesus said in John 15.7-8: “If you abide in me and my words abide in you, ask shall whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.” What would happen if you planted a seed in your garden and then dug it up each day to see if anything was happening? The seed would never produce fruit. The seed must remain in the ground. Trust the power of the Seed. Even when you don’t see anything, God is at work. The Seed is active and alive. The Seed is God.
