Get Covered
One of the most beloved of the Psalms is Psalms 91. It is often quoted in times of distress and turned to for comfort when life turns sour. There are some wonderful promises in this chapter, but it must be noted that these promises are conditional.
Before we read the verses we like most, let us consider the opening lines: “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High…” Everything that follows is specifically promised for those who dwell with God. To dwell is to be where God is, in His house and close to Him. This talks of intimacy and fellowship. It is being close enough so as to be under His shadow. Dwelling with the Lord implies a relationship and communication and is the condition for receiving all that is promised.
Let us look at what is involved in dwelling with the Lord. First, we see that “dwelling” is a shelter, (v.1). It is like a house with a roof. When in the shelter, you are protected from the natural elements of rain, snow, cold, heat, etc. Secondly, it is a fortress, (v.2). This is a place of protection from our enemies. The enemy tries to rob, kill and destroy, but those who are found “in” Christ have life and that more abundantly, (John 10:10). Thirdly, this place of dwelling is place of deliverance. Those who have been snared or trapped by sin and/or sickness are set free in the Lord’s dwelling place. Because of this protection there is no fear.
The psalmist describes this dwelling place as if there was an invisible shield around us. We can see the arrows coming our way, but they cannot reach us. We see those outside being attacked and falling, but we are standing firm. Sickness and darkness tries to prevail, but we come through with victory. It seems that we are aware of troubles on every side, but we are divinely protected. I get this picture of an angry pit-bull on a leash. If you get within his limit, you will be bit, but if you stay outside his area, you are protected.
Access into this “dwelling place” is through the blood of Jesus. It is through the shedding of the blood of Jesus that we have forgiveness of sins. It is through believing in the redemptive work of Jesus on the cross and confessing Him as Lord that we have fellowship with God. Jesus is the Door. To all who receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior, receive forgiveness of sins and the door opens. We must now dwell in this house. Inside we are covered. Outside we are exposed. Don’t come and go. Stay. The Lord’s house is now our house.
